Our God-Given Herb: The Right to Access Cannabis

Updated: Sep 25, 2024

Genesis 1:29

The significance of cannabis, stretching from ancient civilizations to modern medicinal uses, reveals its deep-rooted role as a life-sustaining herb, gifted by God for the benefit of all humankind.  As Genesis 1:29 reminds us, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” This divine declaration underscores cannabis as one of God’s many gifts meant to nourish and heal humanity.  Historically revered as a staple in diets and healing rituals, cannabis has always been more than just a plant; it is a source of nutrition, medicine, and spiritual connection.

Whether consumed raw, infused in teas, blended into smoothies, or used as microgreens, cannabis offers a range of therapeutic benefits. The entourage of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids contributes a reinforced effect, known as the Entourage Effect, with tremendous health significance, particularly when consumed as a raw, unprocessed plant. These life-sustaining properties, essential for maintaining the balance of the body’s systems, emphasize its value as a superfood that supports both physical vitality and spiritual well-being.

However, in modern times, prohibitive laws, inflated costs, and market monopolies have restricted access to cannabis and its vital superfoods, standing in direct conflict with the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. By denying access to cannabis, individuals are deprived of a natural, God-given remedy that has the power to heal and sustain. This obstruction is not only a violation of individual autonomy over health choices but also a transgression against the universal right to access the Earth’s natural bounty for nourishment and healing.

Restricting access to cannabis, a plant meant for the good of all, undermines our collective right to thrive and flourish. Just as our ancestors recognized its life-sustaining power, it is time to reclaim our natural right to this divine herb and ensure that all people, regardless of status or circumstance, have access to the healing properties and nourishment it provides.

Cultural and Medicinal Uses of Cannabis in History

  1. Judaism and Ingestion Through Edibles and Inhalation: In Jewish tradition, cannabis has a long history of use both medicinally and ceremonially.  The medieval Jewish scholar Maimonides (Rambam) classified cannabis as an important herb for pain management, childbirth, and other ailments.  The use of hashish, a concentrated form of cannabis, was consumed as an edible but also inhaled for pain relief, particularly in cases of child birth, where the plant's analgesic properties helped ease the process.  In Jewish communities, cannabis was valued for its ability to calm the nervous system and aid in spiritual practices, thereby becoming a cornerstone of holistic health. Furthermore, Kaneh-bosm, which some scholars argue refers to cannabis, was utilized in the anointing oils of the Hebrew Bible. The plant’s use for medicinal inhalation and topical applications for rituals shows how deeply embedded cannabis was in ancient Jewish wellness traditions. This cultural heritage supports the idea that cannabis is not merely a plant but a God-given resource to promote health and spiritual balance.

  2. Pioneering Emperors and Herbal Wisdom: In Chinese and Indian traditions, cannabis was considered a sacred plant. Chinese emperor Shen Nong, often referred to as the Father of Chinese Medicine, documented the use of cannabis in his pharmacopeia as a remedy for over 100 different conditions, ranging from rheumatic pain to digestive disorders.  Ayurvedic medicine in India also emphasized the use of cannabis in treating ailments like insomnia, anxiety, and malnutrition.  These pioneering civilizations viewed cannabis not just as a food but as a critical medicine that sustained both body and spirit. The historical wisdom of these emperors and herbalists further exemplifies that access to cannabis as a superfood should be recognized as a human right.

Cannabis as a Lifeline for ECS Health and Wellness

Cannabis is one of the few plants known to directly benefit the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), tremendously in its non isolated use delivering the Entourage Effect, which regulates many bodily functions, including mood, pain, immune response, and sleep. The ECS is critical in maintaining homeostasis, and the absence of sufficient cannabinoids from the diet have been shown to correlate to Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD), and related conditions.  By offering cannabinoids through raw consumption, teas, or inhalation, cannabis helps address this deficiency, restoring balance to the body.

The denial of access to cannabis for dietary or medicinal purposes can thus be framed as a denial of the inalienable right to health, as it deprives individuals of a natural solution for maintaining ECS balance and overall health. From this perspective, restricting access to cannabis infringes upon the fundamental right to life and liberty, as it hinders one's ability to prevent disease and maintain well-being.

Inalienable Therapeutic Value

The natural wonders of cannabis, through the synergy of its cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, vastly outperform many patented synthetic pharmaceuticals. The "entourage effect" amplifies these benefits, making cannabis a superior natural alternative. This list highlights its effectiveness compared to common pharmaceuticals:

1. Aspirin (Anti-Inflammatory)

  • Cannabis Solution: The cannaflavin flavonoids (Cannflavin A, B, and C) uniquely present in cannabis provide anti-inflammatory effects up to 30 times more potent than aspirin. When combined with other beneficial compounds in our herb such as the anti-inflammatory terpene beta-caryophyllene and cannabinoids like CBD and CBG, this synergy offers powerful pain relief and reduced inflammation without the gastrointestinal damage or bleeding risk associated with NSAIDs like aspirin.

  • Entourage Effect: CBD reduces inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, while beta-caryophyllene binds to CB2 receptors to modulate the immune response. Together with cannaflavins, this combination addresses multiple pathways of inflammation, enhancing overall efficacy.

2. Opioids (Pain Relief)

  • Cannabis Solution: THC and CBD, when used together, provide potent analgesic effects. THC binds to CB1 receptors, altering pain perception in the brain, while CBD reduces inflammation and neuropathic pain by interacting with TRPV1 receptors. This combination can be further enhanced with terpenes like myrcene and linalool, which add muscle relaxant and sedative properties.

  • Entourage Effect: The combined action of THC, CBD, myrcene, and linalool provides broad-spectrum pain relief, targeting both physical and emotional aspects of pain. This reduces the need for high doses of any single component, minimizing potential side effects and risk of addiction seen with opioids.

3. Antidepressants (SSRIs)

  • Cannabis Solution: CBD modulates serotonin receptors (5-HT1A), producing antidepressant and anxiolytic effects similar to SSRIs like Prozac or Zoloft but without side effects like insomnia, sexual dysfunction, or emotional blunting. Terpenes such as limonene and pinene contribute mood-enhancing and cognitive clarity properties, reducing depressive symptoms and cognitive fog.

  • Entourage Effect: The combination of CBD, limonene, pinene, and even trace amounts of THC creates a balanced mood enhancement without the drawbacks of synthetic antidepressants. The entourage effect promotes a stable mood, reduced anxiety, and improved cognitive function through multiple biochemical pathways.

4. Benzodiazepines (Anti-Anxiety and Sleep Aid)

  • Cannabis Solution: Strains high in CBD and terpenes like linalool (found in lavender) and myrcene provide powerful sedative and anxiolytic effects. These compounds can modulate GABAergic activity similar to benzodiazepines like Xanax or Valium but without the risk of dependency or severe withdrawal symptoms.

  • Entourage Effect: The calming effects of CBD combined with the sedative properties of linalool and myrcene produce a soothing, non-addictive alternative for anxiety and insomnia. The synergy between these compounds ensures a deep, restful sleep and a reduction in stress without impairing daytime functioning.

5. NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

  • Cannabis Solution: The combination of CBD, beta-caryophyllene, and other terpenes like humulene provides comprehensive anti-inflammatory effects. CBD reduces inflammatory markers, while beta-caryophyllene directly interacts with CB2 receptors to suppress inflammation. Humulene adds an additional layer by inhibiting pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.

  • Entourage Effect: This multi-compound interaction targets inflammation at its source, reducing pain and swelling effectively and safely. Unlike NSAIDs, which can cause kidney damage and gastrointestinal issues, this natural approach works synergistically with the body’s own endocannabinoid system to promote healing.

6. Anticonvulsants (Seizure Control)

  • Cannabis Solution: CBD has demonstrated significant efficacy in reducing seizures in epilepsy patients, often outperforming traditional anticonvulsants like valproate or carbamazepine. When combined with minor cannabinoids like CBG and terpenes like linalool and terpinolene, this formulation offers additional neuroprotective and calming effects. Preparations that also include low doses of THC have been found to enhance anticonvulsant properties, as THC can modulate excitatory neurotransmitter release, providing broader seizure control.

  • Entourage Effect: The anticonvulsant properties of CBD are amplified by the neuroprotective actions of CBG, the sedative effects of linalool, and the synergistic involvement of THC, which enhances the overall efficacy by reducing neuronal excitability and stabilizing the endocannabinoid system. This comprehensive treatment calms the nervous system, reduces excitotoxicity, and provides robust seizure control without the debilitating side effects associated with traditional medications.

7. Anti-Emetics (Nausea Control)

  • Cannabis Solution: THC is highly effective in reducing nausea and vomiting, particularly in chemotherapy patients. When combined with CBD, which modulates serotonin and dopamine release, and terpenes like beta-pinene and limonene, this combination reduces nausea and promotes appetite more effectively than drugs like ondansetron (Zofran).

  • Entourage Effect: The combination of THC’s anti-nausea effects, CBD’s serotonin modulation, and the digestive support of terpenes like beta-pinene creates a powerful, holistic anti-emetic solution, with less risk of constipation, headaches, or fatigue seen with conventional drugs.

8. Antibiotics (Antimicrobial Properties)

  • Cannabis Solution: Cannabinoids like CBD and CBG have shown antimicrobial effects, particularly against antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA. When combined with terpenes like pinene and eucalyptol, which have strong antibacterial properties, this natural combination provides a multi-faceted antimicrobial approach.

  • Entourage Effect: The synergistic effects of cannabinoids and terpenes enhance antimicrobial activity, disrupting bacterial biofilms and preventing infections without the resistance development seen with traditional antibiotics.

9. Steroids (Anti-Inflammatory and Immunosuppressant)

  • Cannabis Solution: CBD and THCA provide potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, reducing the need for synthetic steroids like prednisone. Terpenes like humulene and beta-caryophyllene further reduce inflammatory cytokines, offering natural relief for conditions like arthritis and autoimmune diseases.

  • Entourage Effect: The anti-inflammatory actions of cannabinoids, coupled with the immune-modulating effects of terpenes, provide a balanced approach that calms the immune response without the side effects of immunosuppression or hormone disruption associated with steroids.

The Superfood Seeds That Bloom Healthcare

Cannabis seeds are more than just a nutritional powerhouse; they play a crucial role in supporting human health and resilience. Their unique composition makes them essential for addressing various health deficiencies and imbalances, particularly in the context of modern health challenges such as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD), Endocannabinoid System Dysfunction (ESD), and Terpene, Flavonoid, and Cannabinoid Deficiency (TFCD).

1. Nutrient-Rich Profile: Essential for Preventing Deficiencies

Complete Protein: Cannabis seeds are a rich source of complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids required for optimal health. This feature makes them especially valuable in situations of food scarcity or restrictive diets. Protein supports muscle repair, immune function, and energy metabolism, critical in combating malnutrition and maintaining overall health, particularly in those experiencing TFCD.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): Cannabis seeds boast an ideal omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio (approximately 3:1), which is vital for cardiovascular health, brain function, and reducing systemic inflammation. These EFAs facilitate the production of endocannabinoids, essential for maintaining homeostasis within the body, thereby addressing key issues associated with CECD.

Vitamins and Minerals: Rich in essential micronutrients such as magnesium, zinc, potassium, and vitamin E, cannabis seeds help mitigate the risk of deficiencies that may contribute to conditions like ESD. For instance, magnesium is integral to over 300 enzymatic processes, including those involved in stress response and muscle function.

2. Anti-Inflammatory and Cardiovascular Benefits: Combatting CECD and ESD

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA): GLA, present in cannabis seeds, possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties that help alleviate chronic inflammation—a common underlying factor in both CECD and ESD. GLA also aids in regulating hormonal balance, which is critical for managing symptoms associated with endocrine disruptions.

Heart Health: The presence of arginine, an amino acid in cannabis seeds, stimulates nitric oxide production, promoting vasodilation and improved circulation. This mechanism is essential for combating cardiovascular diseases that may be exacerbated by CECD and ESD, both of which can lead to systemic inflammation and associated heart complications.

3. Digestive Health: Essential for Nutrient Absorption and Gut Health

High Fiber Content: Cannabis seeds are rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, which supports a healthy gut microbiome, enhances nutrient absorption, and promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids vital for gut health and immune function. This aspect is particularly significant in preventing TFCD, where impaired nutrient absorption can lead to further health complications.

Gut-Brain Axis Support: A healthy gut is crucial for optimal brain function, and the fiber in cannabis seeds supports this connection, which is vital for alleviating mental and emotional symptoms related to CECD and ESD.

4. Skin and Hair Health: Protection Against Environmental Stressors

Linoleic Acid for Skin Barrier Function: The high linoleic acid content in cannabis seeds is essential for maintaining the skin's barrier function, protecting against environmental toxins and pollutants. This is particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from ESD-related skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis, as it helps to mitigate symptoms and promote overall skin health.

5. Hormonal Balance: Restoring Endocrine Health in ESD

GLA and Hormone Regulation: GLA supports the production of prostaglandins, which play a crucial role in regulating hormonal balance. This regulation is particularly beneficial for managing conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menopause, and thyroid dysfunction. By stabilizing hormonal fluctuations, cannabis seeds can significantly alleviate the symptoms associated with ESD.

6. Weight Management and Metabolic Health: Combating TFCD

Appetite Regulation and Metabolism Boost: The protein and fiber content in cannabis seeds help regulate appetite and support metabolic health, which is vital for maintaining a healthy weight and preventing metabolic syndrome. This is especially important in scenarios involving TFCD, where access to balanced nutrition may be limited.

7. Cognitive and Mental Health: Supporting the Endocannabinoid System

Neuroprotective Benefits of Omega-3s: The omega-3 fatty acids found in cannabis seeds are essential for brain health, supporting cognitive function and potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. In the context of CECD, these fatty acids facilitate the production of endocannabinoids, which help regulate mood, memory, and stress responses, providing a natural solution for mental health support.

8. Immune System Support: Strengthening the Body’s Defenses

Immunomodulatory Effects: The balanced profile of fatty acids, along with the presence of zinc and vitamin E in cannabis seeds, fortifies the immune system, enhancing the body’s defense against infections and chronic inflammation. This is crucial for individuals experiencing CECD, where a dysregulated immune response can lead to persistent illness.

9. Sustainable and Emergency Nutrition: A Lifeline for Survival and Wellbeing

Eco-Friendly and Resilient Crop: Cannabis seeds derive from one of the most sustainable crops on the planet, capable of thriving in diverse climates with minimal resource inputs. In emergency situations, cannabis seeds provide a reliable, nutrient-dense food source that is essential during times of food scarcity or crisis.

Versatile Uses: Cannabis seeds can be consumed raw, roasted, or pressed for oil, and incorporated into various recipes. This versatility makes them an invaluable food source, especially in circumstances where dietary variety is limited and nutritional adequacy is crucial.

10. Cannabis as a Superfood: Forms and Benefits

Microgreens and Smoothies: When consumed as microgreens, cannabis offers concentrated nutrition, including high levels of antioxidants, vitamins (A, C, and K), and essential minerals like calcium and iron. These microgreens can be consumed raw or blended into smoothies, providing essential fatty acids and anti-inflammatory benefits without the psychoactive effects of THC.

Herbal Teas: Historically, cannabis has been enjoyed in the form of herbal teas, a practice highly regarded by many ancient cultures. Notably, the Chinese emperor Shen Nong praised cannabis tea for its ability to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive issues, pain, and inflammation. Infusing cannabis in hot water releases cannabinoids—especially CBD—that offer therapeutic benefits, enhancing immune function and promoting mental clarity. This ancient practice illustrates the long-standing recognition of cannabis as a crucial component of health, reinforcing the idea that access to such superfoods is an inalienable right.

Inalienable Stewardship and Environmental Value

Cannabis, beyond its therapeutic wonders, stands as a testament to humanity's God-given right and duty to nurture and care for creation. From its sustainability to its profound impact on environmental health, cannabis aligns with principles of stewardship, offering natural benefits that far outweigh the damage caused by its prohibition. Here are the unprecedented, God-ordained environmental benefits of cannabis that prove its utilization was intended, while the prohibition actively hinders our ability to care for creation.

1. Carbon Sequestration and Air Purification:

Cannabis acts as a potent natural air purifier. It captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere at a significantly higher rate than many other crops. Hemp, a form of cannabis, can sequester between 8-15 tons of CO₂ per hectare, making it one of the most effective crops for combating climate change. Unlike industrial practices that destroy our atmosphere, cannabis restores balance to the environment.

God’s Design for Healing the Earth: Cannabis plays a role in cleansing creation, reflecting biblical principles of restoration. Just as God placed humans in the Garden to work it and take care of it (Genesis 2:15), cannabis aids in mitigating the damage humanity has inflicted on the planet.

2. Soil Health and Remediation:

Cannabis is a natural phytoremediator, meaning it can clean contaminated soil by absorbing pollutants such as heavy metals, toxins, and radioactive elements. This quality allows it to be grown in polluted areas, where it naturally detoxifies the soil without harmful chemicals. Cannabis restores life to barren and poisoned lands, setting the stage for future generations to thrive in a cleaner world.

Nurturing the Earth as God Intended: Just as humanity is called to be stewards of the Earth, cannabis restores the integrity of the soil. It serves as a living metaphor for God's power to cleanse and restore, offering a natural solution to pollution and environmental degradation.

3. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Support:

Cannabis supports biodiversity by offering habitat and food for pollinators like bees, which are crucial for sustaining ecosystems. As bees face endangerment, cannabis acts as a critical crop during periods when other flowers are scarce, providing nourishment that strengthens pollinator populations.

God’s Wisdom in Creation: Cannabis, designed to bloom at critical times for wildlife, reflects the harmony in God's design. Its prohibition undermines these divine cycles of sustenance, whereas its proper use allows for the flourishing of God's creatures, including endangered pollinators.

4. Water Conservation:

Compared to many agricultural crops, cannabis requires relatively little water. Hemp, in particular, uses less water than crops like cotton, corn, and wheat, while producing far greater yields. This makes cannabis an ideal crop for areas experiencing drought or water scarcity, reducing the strain on natural water resources.

Living Waters and the Gift of Sustainability: Cannabis reflects God’s providence in ensuring that human cultivation can coexist with nature’s delicate balance. Its low water usage embodies biblical stewardship, aligning with God's command to manage resources wisely.

5. Plastic Alternative:

Hemp bioplastics offer a natural alternative to synthetic plastics, which are responsible for extensive environmental pollution. Hemp plastics are biodegradable, meaning they break down naturally in the environment, eliminating the need for toxic, petroleum-based products that persist in ecosystems for centuries.

God's Natural Provision for Sustainability: The use of cannabis to replace harmful plastics speaks to God's provision of resources that can sustain humanity without destruction. Choosing hemp-based solutions over synthetic alternatives demonstrates faithful stewardship and care for creation.

6. Textiles and Building Materials:

Hemp fibers have been used for thousands of years to make durable textiles and paper. It produces more fiber per acre than cotton and requires fewer pesticides, making it a more sustainable option. In addition to clothing and paper, hemp can be used in construction materials like hempcrete, which is carbon-negative, fire-resistant, and highly insulating.

God’s Vision for Shelter and Clothing: Cannabis provides sustainable materials for homes and clothing that minimize environmental harm. It offers an abundance aligned with divine principles of simplicity, sufficiency, and preservation, allowing people to live in harmony with creation rather than exploiting it.

7. Crop Rotation and Soil Enrichment:

Cannabis not only rehabilitates soil through phytoremediation but also enhances soil health when used in crop rotation. It prevents soil depletion and enhances nutrient cycling, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. By aerating the soil, cannabis increases biodiversity within the soil, promoting the health of future crops.

Rotating for Regeneration: This reflects God's cyclical design, where seasons of growth are followed by renewal. Cannabis restores land to its fullest potential, making it a tool for regenerative agriculture as humanity is called to replenish and not deplete the Earth (Leviticus 25:23-24).

8. Energy Efficiency:

Hemp biomass is a renewable energy source. It can be converted into biofuels like biodiesel and ethanol, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Hemp offers an eco-friendly alternative to unsustainable energy practices, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting energy independence.

God’s Renewable Gifts: Hemp biofuel represents a natural solution to the energy crisis, reflecting the biblical principle that God provides what is needed to sustain life on Earth. The use of hemp in energy production can reduce the exploitation of creation, allowing humans to harness clean energy from God's gifts.

9. Job Creation and Economic Stability:

Clarifying lawful access to and cultivation of cannabis can create thousands of jobs in sustainable industries such as textiles, construction, biofuel production, and pharmaceuticals. It can revitalize rural areas by providing farmers with a high-value crop, improving economic stability while promoting environmentally conscious practices.

Economic Justice and God's Abundance: Cannabis offers a path to economic justice, especially for marginalized communities, by providing meaningful work and stewardship over creation. It opens doors to sustainable wealth, contrasting with destructive industrial practices that harm both people and the planet.

10. Theological Reflection on Prohibition:

The prohibition of cannabis contradicts the stewardship mandate given to humanity in Genesis. Rather than nurturing God's creation and utilizing its abundant gifts for healing and restoration, prohibition has led to environmental destruction, economic inequality, and the criminalization of a plant created for good.

God’s Intentions for Freedom and Healing: The Bible teaches that every plant bearing seed is meant for humanity’s benefit (Genesis 1:29). Prohibiting, discouraging, and making the use of cannabis exclusive not only denies this divine provision but also perpetuates the societal and ecological harms that come with the suppression of natural solutions. Ending prohibition would allow the fulfillment of God’s intention for creation to flourish and heal both people and the planet.

In conclusion, cannabis is not merely a therapeutic agent; it is a symbol of God’s generous provision for the stewardship of the Earth. Its ability to purify the environment, restore soil health, conserve water, and provide sustainable materials makes it an essential resource for addressing modern environmental crises. The prohibition and discouragement of cannabis contradicts its God-given potential to heal the land, nurture life, and promote stewardship.

The historical use of cannabis as a superfood—whether consumed as a microgreen, in herbal teas, raw smoothies, or as part of inhalation and edible remedies—demonstrates its unparalleled value in promoting health, wellness, and spiritual growth.  Throughout history, from the wisdom of pioneering emperors to the practices of Jewish scholars like the Rambam, cannabis has been celebrated for its role in sustaining life and treating ailments.

As such, access to cannabis, especially with its blessed wonders should be considered an emergency inalienable right. It is not merely a commodity, but a vital resource provided by nature (or God) to ensure the health, vitality, and liberty of all people. Restricting access to such vital importance is not only a public health issue but an ethical violation of the natural rights of humanity. In reclaiming cannabis and other superfoods as fundamental to life, society can work toward a more just and health-conscious future for all.
